Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra field hockey team picked up a 5-2 non-conference win over Drexel from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The win puts Hofstra at 3-6 on the year, while Drexel moves to 3-4 overall following today's result.
Sophomore
Mercedes Currie got the Pride on the board in the first quarter after she received a pass from freshman
Jasmijn Verdoes on the far post. She quickly redirected the ball past the outstretched leg of the Drexel goalkeeper and into the back of the net with 5:45 on the clock.
Hofstra would find the back of the net twice more in the second quarter to put the score at 3-0 in favor of the hosts going into the halftime break. Junior
Cami Larsson ripped a shot from the top of the shooting arc on a penalty corner that was kicked out for a save. The loose ball fell to junior
Djuna Slort, and she maneuvered into space before firing one past the left foot of the goalkeeper with 4:56 to go in the quarter. A minute and change passed before freshman
Cami Valor scored her first collegiate goal off a loose ball following a saved shot on Verdoes. She claimed the rebound and slotted her shot through the legs of the goalie and into the net.
Drexel scored at 7:56 to make it a two-goal game, but Slort scored her second of the day to put the scoring margin back at three. On Hofstra's third penalty corner of the afternoon, Larsson drew a defender as she looked for a shot, leaving Slort wide open at the top of the arc. Larsson found the Dutch junior, and she fired a shot into the back of the net with 4:41 left in the third quarter. Drexel would score again with 2:30 remaining in the quarter to make it a 4-2 game.
Verdoes made it 5-2 just 30 seconds into the start of the fourth quarter. After a restart following a Drexel foul, Verdoes took the ball and weaved her way through the Drexel defense and into a prime shooting opportunity. With time and space, she wound up and unleashed a hard shot past the goalkeeper and into the net for the final goal of the contest.
Sophomore
Merlijn van der Vegt made six saves in today's game, including a pair of fantastic diving saves.
The Pride will conclude their home schedule on Sunday, April 11, with a conference game against Northeastern at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the Hofstra field hockey program will host a Senior Day ceremony to honor graduating seniors
Colette Euksuzian,
