Hempstead, NY - Hofstra field hockey junior
Cami Larsson put the Pride ahead in the second quarter with a penalty corner goal, but the Pride suffered a 3-1 defeat at home against Northeastern on a rainy Sunday afternoon from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. The loss drops Hofstra to 3-7 overall and 0-2 against Colonial Athletic Association opponents, and Northeastern moves to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Larsson's goal came at three minutes into the second quarter after a scoreless opening 15 minutes. Senior
Frankie O'Brien sent the ball into the penalty area and Larsson combined with junior
Djuna Slort for a give-and-go move that freed up Larsson at the center of the arc. She took a quick shot that zipped past the Northeastern goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
The Huskies evened the score at 1-1 with 5:13 to go before halftime on a penalty corner opportunity. A Northeastern player got her stick to the ball off a shot and the ball deflected high into the air and over sophomore
Merlijn van der Vegt, who went low to stop the initial shot. The ball landed behind the Hofstra goalkeeper and bounced into the back of the net.
A penalty stroke was called for the Huskies after van der Vegt was called for a foul against her inside the shooting arc. The Dutch-born goalkeeper dove to her right in an attempt to save the ball, but the shot was placed just above her stick and out of reach. The third Northeastern came off a Hofstra turnover deep inside their own half on an attempted clear, as the Huskies player intercepted the ball and had a one-on-one opportunity on goal and she finished past a charging van der Vegt.
The Pride will conclude their spring season with a pair of road games in the coming week. Hofstra will first travel to face Towson on Friday, April 16, before making the trip to take on Delaware on Sunday, April 18.
