WLAX: Whelan Has Career Day For Hofstra In Setback To #18 Drexel

Hempstead, NY - Senior Katie Whelan tied her career-high with six points (three goals and three assists) in Hofsra's 19-8 loss to Drexel on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra falls to 3-4 and 0-1 with the loss, while Drexel improves to 8-1 and 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play.

Whelan tied her career-high which was established against Drexel back on April 27, 2019, when she had a goal and five assists against the Dragons. Today marked Whelan's 10th career hat trick.

Drexel scored the game's first two goals before Whelan got her day started with a tally at the 24:49 mark off an assist from graduate student Alexa Mattera. The Dragons then scored seven straight goals before senior Alyssa Parrella scored her first of the day with 17:40 left in the first half to stop the Drexel run. Drexel took a commanding lead into the break as they outshot Hofstra, 19-8, in the opening 30 minutes.

Sophomore Cara Scanio would open the second half with her first career goal, off an assist from Whelan, to get Hofstra its fourth goal of the game.

The Pride scored three of the first four goals to open the second half as Parrella scored her second of the game and Whelan added another as well. Drexel was able to keep the Pride at bay the remainder of the game as they went on to capture the victory.

Mattera finished with a goal and an assist for the Pride, while also adding three ground balls. Parrella tied her career-high with nine draw controls and senior Sabrina Cristodero had four draw controls.

Corinne Bednarik had six points on four goals and two assists for Drexel, which also got four goals and an assist from Karson Harris.

Hofstra is back in action next Saturday when it takes on James Madison at 2 p.m. from the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
