Katie Whelan had a career-high eight points on a career-high six goals and two assists, while senior
Alyssa Parrella became the all-time leading scorer in Colonial Athletic Association history as the Hofstra women's lacrosse team routed #24 James Madison, 13-7, on Saturday afternoon at William G. Tierney Field at the US Lacrosse Headquarters. Parrella had five points on three goals and two assists for Hofstra.
It was Hofstra's first ranked win since defeating #25 High Point, 13-10, on March 16, 2019.
Hofstra, which was playing its fourth consecutive ranked opponent for the first time since 2005, evens its record at 4-4 overall. James Madison fell to 5-4 with the loss. The game did not count in the CAA standings.
Parrella came into the game tied with Suzanne Wosczyna of Old Dominion for the all-time CAA mark of 325 career points, established by Wosczyna from 2001-04. She now has 330 points on 246 goals and 84 assists.
It was all Hofstra to start as the Pride scored the game's first four goals, including a pair from junior
Amanda Guerra, to open up the lead just under 15 minutes into the contest. A goal from junior
Grace Langella would make it 5-1 in favor of Hofstra before James Madison got three consecutive goals to close the gap to 5-4 with 3:23 left before intermission. The Pride was able to take a two-goal advantage into the break as Whelan scored her first of the game with 2:08 left in the opening stanza.
Hofstra would leave no doubt in the second half as they got two quick goals from Whelan to make it 8-4 with 28:49 remaining. After a JMU goal just under a minute later, the Pride poured it on as Parrella had a pair of goals and Whelan added another to make it 11-5 with 16:23 showing on the clock. With the score 11-6 in favor of the Pride, Whelan would put the capper on her career day with two more goals in the final 10-plus minutes of the contest.
Parrella added six draw controls in the game, while graduate student
Alexa Mattera had five, along with a goal. Graduate student
Darcie Smith tallied three draw controls, two ground balls, and a pair of caused turnovers in the win. Sophomore
Kate Fiola had two caused turnovers and two ground balls for the Pride. Junior
Jess Smith made eight saves.
Kacey Knobloch had two goals and an assist for James Madison and Rachel Matey had a goal and an assist. Emma Johnson posted three ground balls for the Dukes, while Matey added two ground balls and two draw controls.
Hofstra dominated on the draws with a 16-6 advantage and outshot James Madison, 37-23.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, April 18, when it travels to Drexel for a 1 p.m. game. That contest will air on the Lax Sports Network.
NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 7-19 all-time against James Madison with the win. The Pride ended a five-game losing skid against the Dukes with the victory.
- Whelan's previous career-high of five goals occurred twice, most recently versus New Hampshire on March 29, 2018. Her previous career-high of six points also occurred twice, most recently against Drexel on April 3, 2021.
- Mattera had five draw controls in the game to give her 203 in her career. She moved into second place all-time in program history with that total and fifth place all-time in CAA history. She passed Brittain Altomare (200 from 2012-15) in both Hofstra and CAA history to move up.
