Hempstead, NY -
Brian Goulard hit a walk-off home run in extra innings in game one and
Steve Harrington broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two with his first career home run as Hofstra swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island Saturday at University Field. Game scores were 3-1 in eight innings in game one and 5-4 in game two.
Hofstra moved to 9-6 on the season with the sweep, taking two of three in the home and home series with Rhode Island, which entered the day as the No. 17 team in the RPI rankings. The Rams slipped to 11-12-1 with the losses.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between
Jimmy Joyce of Hofstra and Rhode Island's Mike Webb. Joyce allowed a first inning run and then held the Rams at bay for his remaining five innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts on the day. Webb went seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Hofstra tied the score in the sixth inning with a two-out rally.
Ryan Morash started it off with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk put runners on the corners, Harrington delivered the first of his two big hits on the day – a single through the right side that knotted the score at one.
The teams used the international tiebreaker in extra innings, starting the eighth inning with a runner on second base.
Andrew Mundy (1-0), who was pitching for the first time this season, came on and recorded a pair of strikeouts and a comebacker to escape the situation in the top half. The Pride did not waste any time as Goulard led off the bottom of the eighth and took a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for a two-run shot off Nate Seprosky (0-2) for the win.
Game two saw Hofstra jump out to a 3-0 lead after two innings before the Rams rallied to tie the game with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. However, Harrington came up as a pinch hitter in the sixth, with Morash on third following a triple, and crushed a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center for his first career home run and a 5-3 Pride lead.
Rhode Island loaded the bases and got a run back in the seventh, but
Chris Mott worked out of trouble to pick up his first save.
Aljo Sujak (1-0) was the pitcher of record on the winning side after working a third of an inning in relief. Domenic Picone (0-1) took the loss for Rhode Island, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings of relief.
Brad Camarda started for Hofstra and pitched well in a no-decision. The Pride righty allowed two runs on six hits in five innings with three strikeouts.
