Newark, DE - Aidan Riley's two run single in the bottom of the 10th inning capped a three-run Delaware rally and gave the Blue Hens a 10-9 victory over Hofstra in the opening game of a four-game series at Bob Hannah Stadium Friday night. Hofstra had gone ahead 9-7 in the top of the 10th.
Hofstra slipped to 9-10 overall and 0-4 in the CAA with the loss. Delaware moved to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in league action.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind a two-run double from
Alex Sica, Hofstra found itself behind 4-2 after Delaware's turn at bat in the frame. The deficit did not last long as Hofstra scored four runs of its own in the top of the third.
Rob Weissheier had an RBI double and
Brian Goulard drove in a run with a single before
Santino Rosso delivered the final two runs with a double of his own.
The Pride tacked on a run in the fourth on a Goulard sacrifice fly to take a 7-4 advantage. However, Delaware scored single runs in the fifth, seventh, and the eighth to tie the score. The Blue Hen run in the eighth that tied the score came on an inside the park home run from Vinny Vaccone, as his fly ball got past a diving
Will Kennedy and went all the way to the wall to allow him to round the bases.
In the Hofstra 10th, with Goulard starting on second base, Rosso walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Goulard came in with the go-ahead run on a passed ball and Rosso followed a few pitches later on a wild pitch. Delaware also took advantage of the runner on second base in its half. Mitchell Balint started on second and came in after back-to-back singles from Aidan Kane and Vaccone. After a walk loaded the bases, Riley came up and singled on a 2-1 pitch to drive in the tying and winning runs.
John Mikolaicyk (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings. Josh Venti (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of no-hit relief. He allowed two unearned runs and struck out seven batters.
The teams return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
