FH: Verdoes Goal Lifts Hofstra Past Towson in Overtime

Towson, MD - The Hofstra field hockey team remains in the hunt for a berth in the CAA Championships thanks to a 2-1 overtime win over Towson Friday afternoon from TU Field Hockey Complex. The win puts Hofstra at 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Towson falls to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Three minutes into sudden victory overtime, freshman Jasmijn Verdoes attacked down the sideline before cutting inside to evade two Towson defenders. She dribbled into the Towson shooting arc and, when the Towson goalkeeper came off her line to break up the shooting opportunity, Verdoes calmly slotted the ball through the keeper's legs and into the net for her second game-winning goal of the season.

Hofstra fell behind, 1-0, 33 seconds into the start of the contest, but they recovered and evened the score at 1-1 three minutes later. Freshman Esmee Verdoes drove into the Towson shooting arc and saw her attempted pass to sister Jasmijn blocked, but Jasmijn slapped the loose ball past the outstretched leg of the goalkeeper and into the net for the tying goal.

Sophomore Merlijn van der Vegt made two saves for her fourth win of the season.

With a spot in the CAA Championship on the line, Hofstra will travel to face Delaware on Sunday, April 18, at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale.
