WLAX: #14 Drexel Rallies To Defeat Hofstra

Philadelphia, PA - Senior Alyssa Parrella had a game-high six points on five goals and an assist, while fellow senior Arianna Esposito added two goals and two assists, but it wasn't enough as #14 Drexel rallied for a 15-11 win over the Hofstra women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field. Senior Katie Whelan also had four points for the Pride on a goal and three assists.

Esposito's four points were a new career-high, while her goal total tied a career-high and her assist total marked a new career-best. The hat trick was the 45th of the career for Parrella and her fifth this season.

Hofstra falls to 4-5 and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss. Drexel improved to 11-1 and 3-0 in league play.

The Pride took its first lead of the game early on as after the Dragons led 2-1, the Pride got back-to-back goals from Parrella and junior Jackie Gatti to make it 3-2 with 18:28 left before intermission. Hofstra took its first two-goal advantage of the game a few minutes later as the Miller Place duo of Esposito and Parrella scored within a minute of each other to push the score to 5-3 with 15:28 showing on the clock. Drexel kept rallying and knotted the score at five with a goal from Hayleigh Simpson before Parrella and Whelan tallied the final two goals of the half to make it 7-5 in favor of the Pride at the break.

Drexel came out of halftime with the momentum, though, and the Dragons scored the first five goals of the second stanza to lead 10-7 with 21:17 left following a goal from Colleen Grady. A goal from graduate student Alexa Mattera cut the deficit to 10-8 just over two minutes later before Drexel extended the lead to 14-8 with four straight goals. The Pride was able to close the gap in the final 10-plus minutes of the contest as Hofstra scored three of the final four goals in the game, but was unable to get closer than four.

Whelan led Hofstra with five draw controls, while Parrella had three, and Mattera and senior Shannon Boyle each added two. Boyle also posted two caused turnovers and led the team with five ground balls as well. Mattera finished with a goal and an assist on the offensive end.

Grady had five points on three goals and two assists for Drexel, while Karson Harris posted four goals for the Dragons.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, April 25, when it travels to Towson for a 2 p.m. game.
