Hempstead, NY - Senior
Alyssa Parrella showed why she is one of the best players in the nation as she tallied four points on two goals and two assists, while also earning a game-high seven draw controls, but #6 Stony Brook pulled away late and defeated the Hofstra women's lacrosse team, 12-8, on Thursday evening at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Hofstra slips to 3-3 with the loss, while Stony Brook improved to 7-2 with the win.
Sophomore
Taylor Mennella scored for the second straight game after a two-goal performance against #6 Boston College and would open up the Pride scoring at the 17:20 mark of the first half to make it an early 3-1 game. Stony Brook would push the lead to 7-1 with a 4-0 scoring spurt before Hofstra scored the final three goals of the half to close the gap to three at the break. Senior
Arianna Esposito got the run started, and Parrella, who assisted on Esposito's goal, tallied the final two goals of the half to make it 7-4.
The two teams went toe-to-toe for the majority of the second stanza with senior
Katie Whelan making it 7-5 with a goal just over a minute into the half. Each team would alternate goals over the next 20-plus minutes with graduate student
Alexa Mattera scoring a free-position goal and Esposito adding her second of the game, each time cutting the deficit to a narrow two-goal lead of the Seawolves. The 9-7 score would be as close as the Pride could get as Stony Brook scored three straight before sophomore
Kate Fiola tallied Hofstra's final goal of the game with 1:46 left.
Senior
Sabrina Cristodero added four draw controls and two ground balls for Hofstra, which got three draw controls and two points (1 G, 1 A) from Whelan. Junior
