Hempstead, NY – Hofstra senior
Ryan Tierney etched his name in two history books today as he became the all-time leading goal-scorer at Hofstra and the all-time leading point-scorer in the Colonial Athletic Association with six goals as the Pride picked up an 18-6 win over Wagner on Tuesday at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Tierney needed just two to tie and three to break the Hofstra record of 140 goals set by Tom Kessler (1999-2001), while he needed only two points to tie and three to break the CAA record of 212 set by Delaware's Curtis Dickson (2007-10). With his six goals on the day, Tierney now stands atop both leaderboards with 144 goals and 216 points in his legendary career.
Receiving votes in the latest USILA Division I Coaches Poll and ranked No. 20 by Inside Lacrosse/Maverik and US Lacrosse Media Polls, the Pride improves to 3-1 following their third straight win. Wagner falls to 0-2 with today's defeat.
Wagner scored the first goal of the day, but it was all Hofstra after that as the Pride put the next six goals on the scoreboard to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Tierney scored his first two goals of the game to tie himself with Kessler and Dickson for the Hofstra and CAA records, respectively, before breaking both records with his hat-trick goal. With 35 seconds left on the clock, graduate student
Alex Concannon found Tierney completely unmarked on the right wing and Tierney received the pass before ripping one past the Wagner goalie to rewrite program and conference history. Concannon, junior
Sterlyn Ardrey and graduate student
Justin Lynskey also put points on the board for the Pride in the opening 15 minutes.
Tierney further added to his historic marks with a pair of goals in the second quarter, with assists from sophomore
Justin Sykes and senior
Riley Forte. Two goals by the Seahawks put the game at 8-3 going into the halftime break.
Following a Sykes tally and a Wagner goal to follow, the Pride offense exploded with five straight goals in the third quarter to put the game well out of reach for the visiting Seahawks. Concannon netted consecutive goals to start the run, while Lynskey, Tierney and senior
James Philbin all tickled the twine for the Pride to put the hosts ahead, 14-4, after three quarters of action.
As the fourth quarter kicked off, Head Coach
Seth Tierney began to rotate his starters out of the game in favor of reserve players. Senior
Matt Elder scored his first goal of the season off a pass by sophomore
Ryan Sheridan, while Sykes finished off a Lynskey pass for his second goal of the day. Senior Joey Elarde picked a top corner for his first goal of the season, while Elder dished out an assist on a goal by sophomore
Liam Muldoon.
Alongside Tierney's six goals, Concannon posted another excellent day with five points on three goals and two assists. Lynskey tallied four points on two goals and two assists, and Sykes put up two goals and an assist for three points. Redshirt sophomore
Mac Gates finished with five saves on the day. Senior
Brian Herber, who had an assist on the day, won nine of Hofstra's 15 face-offs, while sophomore
Chase Patterson won four draws and redshirt sophomore
Nathan Drickamer claimed two face-off wins.
The Seahawks were led by Philip Buque with three goals and Matt Cechini with one goal and one assist for two points.
The Pride will resume play on March 13 in a road game at 1 p.m. against Towson (2-3) to start Colonial Athletic Association action. Hofstra is 27-23 all-time against the Tigers, but dropped the last game played between the two teams in 2019.
