Newark, NJ - Sophomore
Jason Ramirez and senior
Matthew Vowinkel each had a goal and an assist, and freshman keeper
Wessel Speel made a season-high six saves as Hofstra picked up a 2-1 road win over NJIT Tuesday at Lubetkin Field and Malcolm Simon Stadium. The win was Hofstra's second in a row.
The Pride moved to 3-2 on the season while the Highlanders slipped to 1-2-1.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half. The Hghlanders took four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes but Speel was up to the task. Hofstra did not have a shot on goal, but did have a good scoring chance when Vowinkel blasted a shot from outside the box than banged off the crossbar.
Ramirez notched the first goal of his career at 63:28 to open the scoring. A long kick was sent to the top of the box to Vowinkel, who slid a pass to Ramirez on the left side and the sophomore rocketed a shot into the upper right corner for the 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as just about three minutes later, Regsan Watkins came in from the left side of the Hofstra goal and ran parallel to the end line and got a tough angle shot past Speel to knot the score at one.
The score would remain that way until the 83:34 mark when Ramirez got the ball inside the box to the right of the NJIT net. With the defense drawn to him, he chipped a pass across to a wide-open Vowinkel who put the ball in to break the tie. The Highlanders would try and pressure the Pride in the final six minutes as they looked for the equalizer but could only manage two shots that were wide right as the Hofstra defense rose to the challenge.
Samuel Reisgys made three saves for NJIT.
Hofstra returns to action Sunday afternoon in Boston for a CAA matchup against Northeastern. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
