WLAX: Simply Incredible; Parrella Scores 10 Goals In Hofstra Win

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra senior Alyssa Parrella had another virtuoso performance for the Pride women's lacrosse team as she scored 10 goals in a 12-9 win over Villanova on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

It was a spectacular outing for Parrella, who scored all five of Hofstra's goals in the second half, including the final three of the game to break a nine-all tie with just under 10 minutes left. She added four draw controls, a ground ball, and a caused turnover to her astounding outing.

The 10 goals are a career-high for Parrella, a program single-game record, the most by a player in the Colonial Athletic Association since 2002, and the most by an NCAA Division I player since 2019. Samantha Mehalick had 11 goals for Marist against Manhattan on April 27, 2019. In terms of CAA records, it is the second-most in a game by a player in the CAA, only eclipsed by Stacey Morlang of Loyola, who had 12 against American on May 1, 2002.

Hofstra improved to 3-1 with the win, while Villanova falls to 2-4 with the loss.

It was an early deficit for Hofstra as Villanova came storming out of the gates and scored the game's first four goals to lead 4-0 with 21:23 left before halftime. Katie Commerford scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game to help the Wildcats to the early lead. No surprise, Parrella would get Hofstra on the board less than 10 minutes into the game and started a 7-0 Pride scoring run that completely flipped the game in Hofstra's favor. Parrella scored five times during the run and Hofstra also got goals from junior Grace Langella and graduate student Alexa Mattera. The Pride held the Wildcats without a goal for nearly 21 minutes until Villanova tallied the final goal of the first half to make it a 7-5 Hofstra lead at the break.

Parrella would score twice to give Hofstra a three-goal cushion early in the second half, the second time at 9-6 before Villanova rallied to even the score at nine with 9:53 left as Haley Driscoll scored for the Wildcats. The final nine minutes were the icing on the cake for the career day for Parrella as she scored three times in the final 8:15 of the contest to push the Pride to the win. The eventual game-winner came with 8:15 left as Parrella fired a rocket past the Villanova goalie with just one second remaining on the possession clock to make it 10-9 at the time.

Mattera finished with a goal and two assists for Hofstra, while Langella had a goal and an assist. Senior Katie Whelan led all players with six draw controls and also had an assist. Senior Shannon Boyle tallied game-highs of four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Pride, while junior Jess Smith made five saves in net. Junior Erin Tierney chipped in with three ground balls and three draw controls, tying her career-high in ground balls and establishing a new career-high in draw controls.

Haley Driscoll finished with three goals and Kayla Gulmi had a goal and two assists for Villanova. Hanna Driscoll tallied three ground balls for the Wildcats, while Caroline Curnal had three draw controls.

Hofstra is back in action a week from today when it hosts nationally-ranked Boston College at 12 p.m.
