Hempstead, NY – Hofstra erupted for a school-record tying 27 runs in a game two victory as the Pride salvaged a doubleheader split with a 27-7 victory over Sacred Heart at University Field. The 27 runs tied the 1987 team that scored 27 against Mercy College. The Pioneers won game one, 4-3.
Hofstra moved to 6-5 with the split while Sacred Heart dropped to 2-9.
Game 1
Jack Jett pitched a complete game (7 innings) with a career-high 13 strikeouts but suffered a hard-luck loss as the Pioneers scored three times in the sixth inning with two of the runs unearned. Jett allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter as he fell to 1-2.
The teams traded runs in the first inning before Hofstra added a run in the fourth, as
Lane Harris doubled and came in to score on a throwing error, and one in the fifth on
Rob Weissheier's double that scored
Santino Rosso.
In the sixth, Robert Farruggio was hit by a 0-2 pitch to start the inning. Danny Glendon followed with a single up the middle that was misplayed, allowing Glendon to get to second and pinch-runner Mark Smith to score. Austin Markman then delivered an RBI single that tied the score at three. The Pioneers would later score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Hofstra put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth and had a runner on first in the seventh but could not get them home.
Jack Bebbington (1-0) was the pitcher of record for Sacred Heart, retiring the only batter he faced in the fifth. Brendan Coffey went the final two innings to notch the save.
Game 2
Hofstra scored in every inning with a 6-run third, 5-run fourth, and a 7-run fifth, building a 20-0 lead after five innings. The Pride picked up 24 hits in the game with eight different players recording multiple-hit games.
Ryan Morash collected four hits including a double, while
Austin Gauthier,
Anthony D'Onofrio, Weissheier, and
Nick Marrero had three hits each.
Brian Goulard,
Will Kennedy, and
Steve Harrington each had two hits.
D'Onofrio drove in five runs on the day and Marrero knocked in four. Morash and Marrero also scored four runs apiece.
Brad Camarda (1-0) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Matt Auffiero (0-1) took the loss for Sacred Heart, allowing two runs on four hits over two innings.
Joe Emerson had three hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers.
The teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
