Hempstead, NY -
Jimmy Joyce and
John Mikolaicyk combined on a shutout and the Hofstra offense broke open a scoreless game with a three-run seventh inning as the Pride picked up a 5-0 win over Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon. The win was the 180th career victory for Hofstra Head Baseball Coach
John Russo and he is now the all-time winningest coach in program history.
The Pride moved to 7-5 on the season with the win. Sacred Heart falls to 2-10 with the loss.
Joyce (1-1) went eight innings, allowing seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Mikolaicyk came on in the ninth and worked around a walk and a hit batsman to get the final three outs.
After exchanging zeros on the scoreboard for the first six innings, the Pride broke through in the seventh as
Austin Gauthier and
Santino Rosso both walked to start the inning.
Anthony D'Onofrio followed with a double to right field that plated Gauthier. After a strikeout and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out,
Ryan Morash had an infield single that made it a 2-0 game and
Steve Harrington collected his first career RBI with a ground out to second base for a 3-0 Hofstra lead.
The Pride would tack on two more runs in the eighth as D'Onofrio tripled to right to drive in Rosso, who had singled. D'Onofrio would also come in to score on an errant throw during the play.
Jake Babuschak (0-1) took the loss for Sacred Heart, allowing two runs on one hit and five walks in two-plus innings. Sacred Heart starter Chase Jeter threw four scoreless innings. Isiah Daubon and Joe Emerson each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers.
