FH: Hofstra Falls In Home Opener Against Monmouth

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Jasmijn Verdoes opened her account for the Hofstra field hockey team as the Pride suffered a 2-1 defeat to visiting Monmouth on Sunday (Feb. 28) from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

The Pride drops to 0-3 on the season, while Monmouth moves to 1-0 in their season-opener.

At 8:16 of the second quarter, Verdoes attacked the Monmouth penalty circle and maneuvered into a position for a low shot on goal. Her first attempt was saved by the Monmouth goalkeeper, but the rebound fell to Verdoes and she finished low and to the right of the keeper for the opening goal.

Inside the first minute of the third quarter, Monmouth equalized from a blast by Ireen Frenken from the top of the circle and past the outstretched body of sophomore Merlijn van der Vegt. The Hawks took the lead with 3:30 left in the quarter on a counter-attacking opportunity. Monmouth's Annick van Lange drove down the left wing of the Hofstra end and after entering the penalty circle, crossed the ball to a waiting Aylin Aufenacker for the goal.

Verdoes led the team with two shots and two shots on goal. Junior Djuna Slort and freshman Cami Valor recorded one shot each for the Pride. In goal, van der Vegt made seven stops on the day.

The Pride will return to action on Friday (Mar. 5) in a road match with Wagner at 3 p.m., followed by a home game on Sunday (Mar. 7) against Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. Fans will not be permitted to attend Sunday's home game.
