MLAX: High-Powered Offense Leads Hofstra in Win Over #17 Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY – Ryan Tierney had another career day with 11 points on eight goals and three assists as the Hofstra men's lacrosse team downed #17 Stony Brook in a 20-17 thriller on Saturday (Feb. 27) at James M. Shuart Stadium in The Long Island Rivalry.

The Pride improves to 2-1 on the year with the win, while Stony Brook falls to 2-1. Today's win is the seventh for Hofstra in the all-time series with Stony Brook, improving the Pride's record to 7-5 in the series.

Tierney tied career-highs in points and goals set against St. John's in the 2021 season-opener. He now stands with 138 goals in his illustrious career, two away from breaking the Hofstra record of 140 set by Tom Kessler (1999-2001). With his 11-point outing, Tierney becomes the fourth Hofstra men's lacrosse player to score 200 points in a career, moving him to third all-time behind Phil Mordente (211 from 1964-66) and Jerry Simandl (238 from 1952-55).

The two teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the opening period before Tierney and Justin Sykes gave Hofstra a two-goal cushion with goals 40 seconds apart. Stony Brook answered right back with a pair of their own goals, but Justin Lynskey and Riley Forte found the back of the net to give the Pride a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Alex Concannon started off the second quarter with his first goal of the day to give Hofstra a two-point lead, but Stony Brook struck with two quick goals to tie the game once again. Tierney and Concannon set the Hofstra lead back to two goals, but Stony Brook utilized a 4-0 run in the final three minutes of the quarter to close out the first half with an 11-9 advantage.

Tierney and James Philbin found the back of the net inside the first five minutes of the third quarter to tie the game at 11-11, yet Stony Brook went scored three unanswered to put themselves ahead, 14-11. On a man-up advantage following a slash against the Seawolves, Concannon scored on a man-up situation to start a 7-1 run and give Hofstra an 18-15 lead, the first lead of the game for the hosts since the second quarter. A pair of Stony Brook goals reduced The Pride's advantage to one, but Concannon and Tierney killed off the game in the final two minutes with their fourth and eighth goals, respectively.

Concannon ended his day with four goals, and Lynskey scored the first hat-trick of his Hofstra career and added an assist for a four-point afternoon. Philbin posted a three-point day on two goals and an assist, and Forte finished with two assists and a goal for three points.
