FH: Hofstra Falls At Connecticut

Storrs, CT - Hofstra goalkeeper Merlijn van der Vegt made 10 saves in a losing effort as the University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated Hofstra, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.

Hofstra falls to 0-2 on the season while the Huskies, who have won five National Championships, improved to 1-0.

Sophie Hamilton scored the first of her two goals on the day 6:01 into the first quarter to give the Huskies the lead. Connecticut then converted a penalty corner 2:34 into the second quarter with Kourtney Kennedy scoring from Morgan Kaufmann and Claire Van den Noort. Hamilton closed out the first half scoring with a goal at 5:51 on the second quarter with Jessica Dembrowski earning the assist.

The Huskies would add two goals in the second half with Kennedy scoring off a corner once again from Kaufmann and Van den Noort at the 8:48 mark of the third quarter. Kennedy would add her third goal of the contest 2:24 into the fourth off a pass from Hamilton to end the scoring.

Van der Vegt made seven stops in the first 30 minutes of play, including four in the first quarter, before stopping three more shots in the final half. The Huskies had 23 shots in the game with 15 on goal.  

Hofstra will return to action Friday, February 19, at 2 p.m. when it hosts Drexel at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. The game will not count as a CAA contest and is closed to the public. Notes:
-The Pride is 1-5 all-time versus Connecticut. This was the first meeting between the schools since 2011.
- This marked the second 10-save game in van der Vegt's career. Her career-high in saves is 12.
-Jasmijn Verdoes and Haley Carter each had one shot for Hofstra.
