BALTIMORE, Md. – For the third-straight contest, the Hofstra University women's basketball team out-scored its opponent in the second half, but a 19-point second quarter deficit was too much to overcome as the Pride fell to Morgan State on the road on Monday evening.
Hofstra was led in the scoring category for the fourth time this season by senior guard
JaKayla Brown who recorded 14 points and four rebounds. Redshirt-senior
Jaylen Hines also recorded her third-straight game and fifth overall in double figures with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Redshirt-senior
Jaala Henry finished with a 3-of-4 performance from the field for six points, while senior
Vanerlie Valcourt added five points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals off the bench.
Hofstra found itself in a hole early on, as Morgan State out-scored the Pride, 19-7 in the first quarter and 10-5 in the second to put the Pride down, 29-12 at halftime. The Pride had its best shooting effort in the third quarter, shooting 7-of-11 from the field for 19 points. Hofstra closed out the frame on a 10-4 run, as sophomore
Maniya Custis capped off the third quarter with a floating jump shot as time expired. Hofstra continued the run into the fourth quarter and made it a 9-0 spurt to bring the game within six points, 42-36 with 8:26 left in the contest. Morgan State answered with three-straight points and a Hines layup brought it back to a seven-point game, but the Lady Bears continued to keep Hofstra at bay the remainder of the contest.
The Pride, who closed out a tough four-game road trip, fell to 3-4 while Morgan State improved to 5-4.
Hofstra looks forward to returning to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Saturday, December 11 where the Pride will host Ole Miss in a non-conference game.
