WBB: Hofstra Hangs Tough With Ole Miss

Hempstead, NY - Jaylen Hines scored 11 points on 5-7 shooting to lead Hofstra, but Ole Miss pulled away in the fourth quarter to post a 59-37 victory over the Pride Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hines was the only Hofstra player to score in double figures. Zyheima Swint had six points and tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds. JaKayla Brown and Sorelle Ineza also added six points each for the Pride.  

Hofstra fell to 3-5 with the loss. Ole Miss moved to 9-1 on the season with its ninth consecutive victory.

Both teams started slowly on the offensive end, combining for nine points in the opening five minutes of the first quarter. The Hofstra defense pressured the Rebels into eight first quarter turnovers but trailed by six, 14-8, after 10 minutes of play. Ole Miss held a 10-5 advantage on the boards in the quarter including four offensive rebounds.

Defense was at the forefront of the second quarter as well as neither team had many open shots. The Pride trailed 18-14 with 6:36 to go in the half following a jumper from Ineza. Ole Miss then scored the next four points to take an eight-point advantage, 22-14, with 5:08 on the clock following Andeija Puckett's layup. The lead would grow to 10, 24-14, following the media timeout and the Rebels would take a 12-point lead, 28-16, into the locker room at the half.

The Pride would open the third quarter with a 6-1 run over the first 2:59 to draw within seven, 29-22, following a layup from Brown. The teams would alternate scoring over the next several possessions with Hofstra getting as close as six points, 37-31, with 3:44 to go on Caria Reynold's jump hook. The Rebels scored the final four points of the quarter to go back up by 10, 41-31.

The Rebels pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pride, 18-6, in the quarter to take the 22-point win.

Shakira Austin of Ole Miss led all scorers with 18 points and added six rebounds, three blocks, and six steals. Puckett finished with nine points, while Madison Scott had seven points and nine rebounds.  

Hofstra returns to action Saturday, December 18 at Cleveland State with a 2 p.m. tip. The Pride is back home at the Mack Sports Complex on Tuesday, December 21 at 1 p.m. versus Stony Brook. -Jaala Henry had three steals and two blocks for the Pride.
