WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hofstra University women's basketball team clawed all the way back from a 14-point second quarter deficit and outscored Howard, 38-25 in the second half but the Pride ultimately fell in overtime to the Howard Bison at Burr Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Two Hofstra players recorded their first Pride double-doubles of the season, as redshirt-senior
Jaylen Hines led in both the scoring column (17 points) and on the boards (13 rebounds) including an 11-of-12 effort from the free throw line. Just behind Hines was senior
JaKayla Brown who picked up the first double-double of her career, tallying 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior
Jaala Henry also finished in double figures for the Pride as she compiled 12 points and seven rebounds to go along with a team-high three assists.
Hofstra struggled to find the bottom of the net for the first half as the Pride found itself down by a 28-15 score at the half. After three points following the third quarter media time out, Hofstra began to catch fire, using a 11-3 run to get within five points by the 2:09 mark. Hines made six free throws during the burst before nailing a jump shot at the 1:33 mark. Senior
Rosi Nicholson knocked down a three-pointer underneath the one-minute mark to bring the contest back within five points, but Howard answered with a layup with 29 seconds remaining in the quarter to send the contest into the fourth frame with a score of 44-37 in favor of the Bison.
The Pride opened up the fourth quarter with another run, this time an 8-0 burst with points by Henry, Nicholson, senior
Vanerlie Valcourt and Brown. Valcourt brought Hofstra within one point with a steal and layup on the other end before Brown gave Hofstra its first lead of the day with a second-chance layup, bringing the score to 45-44. Nicholson knocked down a jump shot to give the Pride a three-point lead, but that advantage was quickly taken back by Howard who responded with a 7-0 run of their own. The lead went back and forth and the spurts continued as it was then Hofstra who rattled off five-straight points and claiming the lead back, 52-51. Brown gave Hofstra another advantage to make the score 55-53 with 17 seconds remaining, but Howard tied up the contest in regulation, 55-55, with three seconds on the clock to force overtime.
Overtime was closely contested the whole way as the game was tied up at 57, 59, and 62, but Howard's Destiny Howell hit a layup with five seconds remaining to give Howard a 64-62 lead. Hofstra managed to get a shot off at the buzzer, but it bounced off the rim as time expired as the second half effort fell short for the Pride.
Following the contest, Hofstra evened its record to 3-3 overall while Howard did the same and improved to 4-4.
Hofstra closes out a four-game road swing on Monday evening as the Pride is set to face Morgan State in Baltimore. Tip-off at the Hill Field House is set for 7 p.m.
