KENNESAW, Ga. – The Hofstra University women's basketball team sprinted to the finish line and posted its best shooting night of the 2021 season en route to a 72-57 victory over Kennesaw State on Friday evening at the KSU Convocation Center. Hofstra shot an unbelievable 86-percent (12-of-14) in the fourth quarter to help claim the victory.
The Pride improved to 3-2 on the season while Kennesaw State dropped to 2-4 overall.
Hofstra marked a season-best 50-percent (25-of-50) from the field including a blistering 7-of-12 mark (59-percent) from beyond the arc. Even more impressive, the Pride closed out the contest draining 11 of its final 11 baskets.
The Pride saw four players reach double figures in scoring, led by redshirt senior
Jaala Henry who tallied a career-high 16 points on a 7-of-11 effort from the field while also tying for a team-high five assists. Senior
JaKayla Brown followed with 15 points (4-of-9 FG) while also recording a perfect 6-of-6 effort from the free throw line. Redshirt sophomore
Sorelle Ineza shot 50-percent from the floor for 11 points including a 3-of-5 effort from beyond the arc while also collecting five boards, while redshirt senior
Jaylen Hines matched Ineza's 11 points and hauled down six rebounds. For the third time in the last four games, senior
Rosi Nicholson was Hofstra's leader on the glass with seven rebounds, one short of her career-high, while also recording a career-high five assists.
The game was closely contested most of the way with seven lead changes and 10 ties. Kennesaw State had the upper hand following the first quarter, holding a 17-14 advantage over the Pride. Hofstra out-scored the Owls, 15-12 in the second quarter, however, bringing the halftime score to an even 29-29.
The Owls made a three-pointer at the 4:49 mark of the third quarter and a fastbreak layup at 3:53, giving Kennesaw State its largest lead of the contest (six points) on two occasions. The Pride scored five-straight points to bring things back within two before a free throw gave Kennesaw State a three-point lead heading into the final stanza.
The fourth quarter is where all the magic happened for the Pride, as Hofstra rattled off 30 points including a perfect 3-for-3 effort beyond the arc to help claim the win. Four Pride players were perfect in the final stanza including Ineza (3-for-3, 2-for-2 3FG), Hines (4-of-4 FG), Henry (4-of-4) and
Jada Peacock (1-for-1 3FG). Sophomore
Caria Reynolds made a second-chance layup with 9:16 to go to spark the offensive burst before shots kept falling for the Pride who finished the matchup on a 21-6 run.
Hofstra plans to carry the momentum into another road trip, as the Pride is set to battle Howard next on Saturday, December 4. Tip-off at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. is set for 2 p.m.
