Ana Martinovic tied her personal and Pride individual season-high with 17 kills, while hitting at a robust .485, in leading the Hofstra volleyball team to a four-set win over UNCW on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.Â
The win was Hofstra's fourth in its last six matches and improves the Pride's record to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play. UNCW drops to 3-20 and 2-10 in the conference. Hofstra won by set scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-22, and 25-19.Â
Martinovic added eight digs, three assists, and a pair of blocks in the match as she carried the Pride to the win. Freshman
Florencia Wolkowyski contributed 14 kills and four blocks for the Pride. Freshman
Beatriz Alves was stellar for Hofstra throughout the match and tallied 46 assists, six kills, four digs, and two blocks.Â
Similar to Saturday's match, Hofstra and UNCW would split the first two sets to set up a pivotal third stanza. The set was knotted at 20 before Hofstra got a bit of breathing room with two straight points, including a service ace from Alves. A block from junior
Sarah Pierre would give the Pride a set point and a UNCW error allowed Hofstra to take a two sets to one lead in the contest.Â
Hofstra broke a 15-all tie in the fourth set with a kill from Alves and later used a 4-0 run to take a 22-17 lead after a block from Pierre and Wolkowyski. A kill from junior
Zyare Abdul-Rahim closed the match for Hofstra and sent the Pride to its 13th win of the season.Â
Abdul-Rahim chipped in with 10 kills for the Pride, which also got eight blocks from Pierre.Â
Brianna Haggerty had 10 kills and nine digs for the Seahawks, which also got 20 assists from Claire Sawyer.Â
Hofstra is back in action on Friday when it travels to Elon for the start of a two-game series against the Phoenix. Friday's match will start at 7 p.m. and air on FloVolleyball.Â
NOTES
- Hofstra is 31-7 all-time against UNCW. The Pride has now won five straight matches against the Seahawks.Â
- The 17 kills by Martinovic tied the Hofstra individual season-high previously recorded by Abdul-Rahim at Northeastern on September 26 and by Martinovic versus William & Mary on October 10.Â
