VB: Hofstra Opens Weekend With Win Over UNCW

Hempstead, NY - Graduate student Ana Martinovic and junior Zyare Abdul-Rahim each had a match-high 14 kills to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a four-set win over UNCW on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Martinovic added 12 digs for her team-leading eighth double-double of the season.

Hofstra improved to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win. UNCW fell to 3-19 and 2-9 in league action. Set scores were 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, and 27-25.

The first set was knotted at nine before Hofstra scored eight straight points to take a commanding 17-9 lead en route to a dominating opening set victory. A kill from Abdul-Rahim got the run started and Martinovic put the finishing touches on the set-changing run with a kill of her own.

UNCW evened the match at one set each as they rallied from a late 20-18 deficit to take the two-point victory.

It was another strong effort for Hofstra in the third stanza as the Pride broke the set open midway through, scoring five straight points to take a 21-14 lead after a block from Abdul-Rahim and junior Sarah Pierre. Abdul-Rahim ended the set and put the Pride on the brink of victory with another kill.

In the fourth and final set, the Pride would fight off three set points, including the last one at 25-24 before a kill from freshman Florencia Wolkowyski kick-started a set-closing 3-0 run that gave the Pride the match. Freshman Beatriz Alves ended the contest with one of her two service aces in the match.

The Pride got 15 digs from freshman Chiara Cucco and 45 assists, seven digs, and four kills from Alves. Sophomore Damla Tokman and Wolkowyski each contributed nine kills in the match, with Tokman adding three blocks.

Katie Lanz led UNCW with 10 kills and added six digs and three blocks. Annabelle Schall had 15 assists and six digs.
