Zyare Abdul-Rahim each had a match-high 14 kills to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a four-set win over UNCW on Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
Martinovic added 12 digs for her team-leading eighth double-double of the season.
Hofstra improved to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win. UNCW fell to 3-19 and 2-9 in league action. Set scores were 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, and 27-25.
The first set was knotted at nine before Hofstra scored eight straight points to take a commanding 17-9 lead en route to a dominating opening set victory. A kill from Abdul-Rahim got the run started and Martinovic put the finishing touches on the set-changing run with a kill of her own.
UNCW evened the match at one set each as they rallied from a late 20-18 deficit to take the two-point victory.
It was another strong effort for Hofstra in the third stanza as the Pride broke the set open midway through, scoring five straight points to take a 21-14 lead after a block from Abdul-Rahim and junior
Sarah Pierre. Abdul-Rahim ended the set and put the Pride on the brink of victory with another kill.
In the fourth and final set, the Pride would fight off three set points, including the last one at 25-24 before a kill from freshman
Florencia Wolkowyski kick-started a set-closing 3-0 run that gave the Pride the match. Freshman
Beatriz Alves ended the contest with one of her two service aces in the match.
The Pride got 15 digs from freshman
Chiara Cucco and 45 assists, seven digs, and four kills from Alves. Sophomore
Damla Tokman and Wolkowyski each contributed nine kills in the match, with Tokman adding three blocks.
Katie Lanz led UNCW with 10 kills and added six digs and three blocks. Annabelle Schall had 15 assists and six digs.
Hofstra and UNCW will conclude the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will air on FloVolleyball.
NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 30-7 all-time against UNCW. Hofstra has won four straight in the series.
- Abdul-Rahim was in double figures in kills for the eighth time this season and today marked the 15th time this season for Martinovic. Martinovic also has led Hofstra in kills 10 times this season and Abdul-Rahim five times.
- Hofstra is now 4-3 in four-set matches this season.
- Hofstra is 4-1 at home this season and 6-2 at home over the last two seasons.
