Elon, NC -
Hendrik Hebbeker scored both Hofstra goals as the 14th-ranked Pride clinched a Colonial Athletic Association Championship berth with a 2-0 victory over Elon Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. The victory was also Hofstra's fourth in a row and extended the Pride's unbeaten streak to 12 games.
Hofstra moves to 14-1-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in the CAA. The Pride will be making their 10th consecutive appearance in the conference postseason tournament, which takes place Nov. 11 and Nov. 14 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Elon slips to 7-7-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league play.
Hebbeker turned in a great individual effort in scoring the first goal, forcing a turnover in the Elon box and dribbling in on goal before lifting a right-footed shot over the left shoulder of charging Elon keeper Peter Wentzel at the 19:27 mark.
Hebbeker found the back of the net again in the second half (68:56) as the Phoenix turned the ball over in their own end and
Roc Carles sent a pass to Hebbeker, who dribbled into the box, stutter-stepped, and beat his defender to the left before sending a left-footed shot that banged off the inside of the far post and into the goal. Â Â
Hofstra keeper
Wessel Speel made three second half saves to record his third consecutive solo shutout. Wetzel had five saves for Elon. The Pride outshot the Phoenix, 16-7, and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hofstra will look to lock up the regular season CAA championship and the top seed in the tournament when it hosts UNCW next Saturday, Nov. 6, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in the final game of the regular season. Kickoff is at 12 p.m.
