MSOC: No. 19 Hofstra Edges No. 23 James Madison To Take Over First Place In CAA

Hempstead NY - Matthew Vowinkel scored a second half goal and the Pride defense limited James Madison to just three shots on goal as No. 19 Hofstra notched a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the 23rd-ranked Dukes Saturday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win moved Hofstra into sole possession of first place in the CAA with 13 points.

The Pride (13-1-1, 4-1-1 CAA) extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games and its winning streak to three games with its sixth one-goal victory of the season. James Madison slipped to 10-4-1
overall and 4-2-0 in league play.

The teams played a scoreless first half with Hofstra pushing the action with 10 shots, including four on goal, and four corner kicks. The Dukes had four shots in the opening 45 minutes and put one on target.

The Pride finally broke through at 71:09 as Ryan Carmichael sent a long cross from the far sideline to the near post where Vowinkel outleaped his defender and headed it past Dukes keeper Martin Leu. The goal was Vowinkel's seventh of the season and third in the last two games.

The Dukes tried for the equalizer but could not get a shot past Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel. Axel Ahlander had the Dukes best chance, but Speel stopped his 20-yard blast with just under 10 minutes to play.

Speel finished with three saves while Leu had seven for James Madison.

Hofstra will look to maintain its lead and lock up a CAA Championship berth next Saturday (October 30) when it travels to Elon for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
