Hempstead, NY -
Matthew Vowinkel scored two goals and added an assist, and
Ryan Carmichael continued his scoring run with a goal and an assist as No. 19 Hofstra picked up a 4-0 victory over visiting Lafayette Tuesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Carmichael's goal was his NCAA-leading 13th of the year and was his 11th goal in the last seven games.
Hofstra extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1) and moved to 12-1-1 on the season. Lafayette fell to 7-6-2 with the loss.
Hofstra got on the board first as Vowinkel converted a penalty kick at 32:01 to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. The graduate forward extended the lead a little over five minutes later when he put in a rebound of Carmichael's shot at 37:33.
Mason Tatafu, who is the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, made it a 3-0 game at 66:59 when he headed a perfectly driven corner kick from
Lorenzo Selini past Lafayette keeper Griffin Huff. The assist was Selini's first career point.
Carmichael closed out the scoring at 78:01, finishing a great passing sequence that started in the Hofstra end as
Shane Salmon sent a long pass to Vowinkel outside the center of the box. He flicked the ball on to a streaking Carmichael, who lofted a shot over Huff's head into the goal.
Hofstra keeper
Wessel Speel was barely tested in the game as the Leopards managed just two shots on goal. The sophomore was up to the task, saving both as he recorded his fifth shutout of the season.
Hofstra will next be in action Saturday when it hosts No. 23 James Madison in a crucial CAA matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
