Hempstead, NY - Hofstra junior
Athina Dimitriadis led the Pride with 10 kills and added four digs and four blocks in a four-set defeat at Charleston on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena.
Beatriz Alves had a double-double for Hofstra with 32 assists and 13 digs, while also chipping in with five kills. A pair of players had strong matches defensively with freshman
Chiara Cucco tallying 21 digs and graduate student
Ana Martinovic adding a season-high 17 digs.
Hofstra drops to 11-10 and 5-5 in Colonial Athletic Association action with the loss. Charleston improved to 13-8 and 6-4 in conference play. Set scores were 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, and 25-23.
After Charleston took the opening set, Hofstra rebounded and earned a four-point victory in the second stanza. A kill from junior
Zyare Abdul-Rahim gave the Pride an early 5-4 advantage and Hofstra would never relinquish it the rest of the way as Dimitriadis ended the set and tied the match with a kill late in the stanza.
The Cougars retook the lead with a commanding win in the third set, meaning Hofstra would need a fourth set win to extend the match. The Pride got off to a hot start, scoring the first three points of the set before Charleston immediately responded with three points of their own. The two teams would battle back and forth with the set knotted at 21 after back-to-back service aces from senior
Maddie Appleton. Hofstra was unable to retake the lead, though, as Charleston escaped with the two-point victory and the win in the match.
