WBB: Brown Scores 22 As Hofstra Sweeps UNCW

Hempstead, NY - JaKayla Brown scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half as Hofstra pulled away from UNCW for a 59-48 Colonial Athletic Association victory Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Pride led by one at halftime and outscored the Seahawks, 32-22, over the final two quarters to complete the weekend sweep.

Hofstra improved to 6-10 on the season and 4-6 in the CAA with the victory. UNCW, which has lost eight consecutive games, fell to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in league play.

Brown, who had 12 points in the fourth quarter, followed up a 20-point performance in Saturday's win, by leading all scorers with her 22 points. She also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jahsyni Knight and Jaylen Hines each had 12 points, with Knight adding five rebounds and a team-best five steals and four assists. Hines had six rebounds. Zyheima Swint came off the bench to score five points and grab a career-high 11 rebounds in 17 minutes of action.   

The Seahawks led 19-13 after one quarter. UNCW used a 10-0 to take a 12-2 lead with 5:40 to play following a three-pointer from Mary McMillan. The Pride would get within seven, 17-10, with 2:16 to play in the quarter after a steal and a fast-break layup from Knight. Hofstra would pull within six on two occasions in the final minute, once on a free throw from Swint with 48 seconds to go and a final time with four ticks remaining on an offensive rebound and put back from Hines.

Hofstra scored the first six points of the second quarter to tie the game at 19 following a short jumper in the paint from Caria Reynolds with 5:32 on the clock. The Pride took their first lead of the game, 21-19, on a put back from Hines with 4:42 to play. The Seahawks missed their first 11 shots of the quarter before tying the score at 21 on Carol-Anne Obusek's jump hook with 3:05 remaining. The teams traded the lead five times during the final 2:03, the final time giving Hofstra a 27-26 lead that it took into halftime following a pair of Knight free throws with 28 seconds remaining.

The Pride started the third quarter the same way they started the second, scoring the first seven points of the stanza to extend the lead to eight, 34-26, with 5:58 to play on a three-pointer from Knight. The Pride defense held the Seahawks to 0-4 shooting and forced three turnovers over the first four minutes of the quarter. Hofstra maintained a lead for the entire quarter, though the Seahawks did get as close as three, 36-33, with 1:46 to go. Knight put the Pride back up by six, 39-33, with 1:05 to play with a three-pointer and UNCW did not score on their final two possessions of the quarter.

Brown put Hofstra up by 10, 43-33, to begin the fourth quarter with a pair of layups. UNCW scored four consecutive points to make it a six-point game with 7:45 to play. However, Brown scored her sixth point of the quarter to stop the UNCW spurt with 6:48 to go. The Seahawks would get within five, 45-40, with 5:35 to play on a McMillan free throw. Hines would answer for the Pride to extend the lead to seven and Jaala Henry followed with a bucket of her own to make it 49-40 with 4:46 to go. The Seahawks would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.

McMillan led UNCW with 14 points. Obusek and Dazia Powell each added 13 points for the Seahawks. Obusek also had 11 rebounds.      

Hofstra returns to action Saturday, February 6, at Drexel with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
