WBB: Hofstra Drops CAA Contest to Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – The Hofstra University women's basketball team returned to the court for the first time after a 28-day layoff due to postponements and schedule changes due to COVID-19, but the Pride ultimately fell in a 68-39 decision inside the Cabot Center on Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra dropped to 6-11 on the season and 5-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association while Northeastern improved to 7-11 and 6-9 in the league.

Redshirt junior Jaylen Hines paced Hofstra with 12 points, including a 2-of-2 effort from behind the three-point line. Hines also tied for team-high honors with junior Jahsyni Knight in the rebounding and steals category with seven and three, respectively. Knight also added nine points for Hofstra, as well as junior JaKayla Brown who also chipped in nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Jaala Henry shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the field for seven points and hauled down four rebounds.

Northeastern got out to a quick start over Hofstra, but Brown was hot early, scoring the Pride's first seven points of the game. After a Northeastern three-pointer tied the game at seven, the Huskies used a 13-2 run to end the first quarter with a 20-11 advantage.

Knight and Hines scored the first two field goals of the second frame to cut it to nine, but Northeastern scored the next eight out of 10 points to keep the Pride at bay. Brown hit two free throws to end the half but Northeastern led, 36-19. Out of the locker room, Northeastern drained three-straight treys to stretch the lead back out to 45-21. Hines responded with a three-point basket and hit her second three moments later, but the Pride could not cut the deficit down the rest of the way as the Huskies held on for the 68-39 final margin.

Hofstra will close out the regular season at home on Tuesday, March 2 for another meeting with the Northeastern Huskies. The game will also serve as senior day where the Pride will honor its two seniors, Mikiyah Croskey and Mie Hoff. The game is closed to the public and no tickets will be sold, however the game will be streamed live on FloHoops and there will be free live audio courtesy of WRHU.
