WBB: Delaware Pulls Away From Hofstra In Fourth Quarter

Hempstead, NY - JaKayla Brown and Jaylen Hines combined for 34 points but it was not enough as Delaware pulled away in the fourth quarter in a 76-55 Colonial Athletic Association victory. Hofstra trailed by five entering the final 10 minutes.

The Pride slipped to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in CAA action following the loss. Delaware, which is receiving votes in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, moved to 8-1 on the season and remained undefeated in league play at 5-0.

Brown led the Pride in scoring with 19 points while Hines had 15 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

The teams traded baskets to open the game with Jasmine Dickey opening the scoring for the Blue Hens 30 seconds in. Brown answered for the Pride 50 seconds later. However, Delaware went on an 11-0 run to open up a 13-2 lead with 3:41 on the clock. After swapping baskets, Hofstra scored six unanswered points to pull within five, 15-10, with 1:41 to play following a layup from Vanerlie Valcourt. Delaware would score the final three points to lead, 18-10, after one quarter.

Delaware opened up a 28-13 lead midway through the second quarter with Dickey scoring all 10 of the Blue Hens points. The Pride would get within 12, 28-16, behind three free throws from Brown. Five consecutive points from Delaware pushed its lead back to 17, 33-16, with 2:17 remaining. Hines would score four points in a row for Hofstra to make it a 13-point game and, following a defensive stop, Brown sank two free throws to pull the Pride within 11, 33-22, with 50.5 seconds to play until halftime. Brown had two more free throws with 31 seconds to go to cut the Pride's deficit to single digits, 33-24, before Dickey closed the scoring with a three-point play 17 seconds later that sent the Blue Hens into the locker room with a 36-24 lead.

Hofstra started the third quarter with five straight points (three from Hines and two from Brown) to get with seven, 36-29, with 7:55 on the clock. Zyheima Swint made it a three-point game, 38-35, with 4:42 remaining following back-to-back baskets for the Pride. The Pride would keep it close the rest of the quarter but did not get closer than three points and trailed, 46-41, at the end of 30 minutes of play.

The teams traded baskets for the early portion of the fourth quarter before the Blue Hens upped their lead to 10 with five straight points. Jewell Smalls' three-pointer gave Delaware the double-digit advantage with 6:52 remaining. Jahsyni Knight answered with a three-pointer for Hofstra to make it a seven-point contest, 58-51, with 6:39 to go. Delaware would go on a 10-0 run over the next 3:18 to pull away. The Blue Hens scored seven of those points at the free throw line. The Pride would not get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.  

Dickey led all scorers with a career-high 37 points. Lizzie Oleary joined her in double-figures with 12 points. Dickey also pulled down 10 rebounds, sharing team-high accolades with Ty Battle.  

Hofstra and Delaware will play again tomorrow with a 2 p.m. tip-off time. The game is closed to the public and no tickets are available.

Notes:
- Brown has led Hofstra in scoring six times this season
-Hines' 14 rebounds topped her previous season-high of 13 vs. Albany and was her second double-double of the season.
-Mikiyah Croskey had six points on 3-4 shooting in 15 minutes off the bench.
-Knight tied a career-high with seven assists.
-Delaware leads the all-time series with Hofstra, 64-12, and has won 10 consecutive games.
