WBB: Hofstra Puts Four In Double-Figures Against Delaware

Hempstead, NY - Ana Hernandez Gil led four Pride players in double-figures with 14 points but Delaware pulled away from Hofstra in the second half for a 77-67 Colonial Athletic Association victory Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra falls to 3-19 overall and 0-11 in the CAA with the loss. Delaware improves to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in league play.

The first quarter was a close one with neither team able to take a decisive advantage, ending in a 14-14 tie. The quarter featured four tie scores and two lead changes. The Pride's biggest lead of the quarter was three on multiple occasions. Delaware's largest lead was two points. Sorelle Ineza and Sandra Karsten paced the Hofstra offense with four points each as the Pride shot 67-percent (6-9) in the period.

The Blue Hens got the better of play in the second quarter, outscoring the Pride, 21-14, to take a 35-28 lead into halftime. With the score tied at 20, Delaware went on an 11-4 run to take a seven-point lead, 31-24, following Samone Dafreese's three-pointer. The Pride would cut the lead to five on two occasions, but did not get closer. Delaware shot 58-percent in the quarter (7-12), while the Pride slipped to 36-percent.

Delaware would come out of halftime with an 11-0 run to take a 46-28 lead with 7:20 on the clock. The Pride would cut the lead to 13, 48-35, on a driving layup from Hernandez Gil with 5:25 to go. However, Delaware would answer with four unanswered points to go back up by 17 before settling for a 56-40 lead after three quarters.

The fourth quarter saw the Pride trail by as many as 21, 66-45, following a Kayla Shaw jumper. The Pride went on an 8-0 run sparked by a three-pointer from Hernandez Gil and five straight points from JaKayla Brown to make it a 13-point game with 3:08 to go. Hofstra would close to within nine, 70-61, with 1:14 to play after two free throws from Marianne Kalin, and with just under a minute left made it an eight-point deficit, 71-63, following an offensive rebound and put back by Jaylen Hines. That would be as close as the Pride would get.

Joining Hernandez Gil in double-figures were Hines, Kalin and Brown who each had 11 points. Hines added a team-high five rebounds and two steals. Delaware's Nicole Enabosi had a game-high 17 points, Jasmine Dickey added 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Abby Gonzales added 14 points.

Hofstra returns to action Friday, February 14 at Elon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

-Delaware leads the all-time series with Hofstra, 63-12.  
-Kalin has scored in double-figures in three straight games.
-Hofstra set a season-high with 18 made free throws and matched a season-best with a .818 free throw percentage.
-The Pride celebrated Alumnae Day and welcomed back former players from six different decades.
