WBB: Drexel Outlasts Hofstra In Defensive Battle

Hempstead, NY - In a game that was heavy on defense, Drexel was able to outlast Hofstra by the score of 45-32 in a Colonial Athletic Association game Friday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Both teams put up a season-low in points in the game.

Hofstra fell to 3-18 on the season and 0-10 in the CAA. Drexel, the first-place team in the CAA moved to 16-6 and 9-1 in league play. The Dragons have won nine consecutive games.

Neither team could get untracked offensively in the first quarter. The Pride scored the first four points and their defense kept the Dragons off the board for the first 4:49, but Drexel went on a 10-0 run over the final 5:11 to lead 10-4 after 10 minutes. Marianne Kalin and Jaylen Hines had the Pride's points in the quarter, two apiece, while the Dragons had four players score their 10 points.

The Dragons would go up by 15, 22-7, late in the second quarter following a three-pointer from Kate Connolly. The Pride got just their second field goal of the quarter on its next possession as Kalin hit her second layup of the stanza to make it a 22-9 game with 1:19 to go. Petja Krupenko cut the deficit to 11 with a steal and fast break layup with three seconds to play as Hofstra went into the half trailing, 22-11.

The Pride would come out inspired in the third quarter, using a 7-2 run to make it a six-point game at 24-18 following a Hines jumper in the paint with 5:55 to play in the period. The Dragons would go back up by 10, 30-20, with 1:03 to play. However, Kalin closed out the quarter with an offensive rebound and put back to make it 30-22 after 30 minutes of play.

Leading by eight, 35-27, in the fourth quarter, Drexel would go on a 10-0 run over a 5:26 span to put the game out of reach at 45-27. Hofstra would score the final five points to make it a 13-point final. Kalin had a layup while Ana Hernandez Gil knocked down a three-pointer.

Kalin finished with a game-high 12 points for the Pride and added seven rebounds. The senior forward shot 6-11 from the field. Hernandez Gil added nine points on 3-4 shooting from three-point range. Hines had seven points and grabbed a game-high tying 10 rebounds.  

Mariah Leonard led Drexel with 10 points while Bailey Greenberg, the third-leading scorer in the CAA, was limited to 3-of-15 from the field for eight points and 10 rebounds. Connolly finished with nine points for the Dragons.

Notes:
-Hines has now led Hofstra in rebounding in 15 games this year.
-Kalin made her 79th consecutive start
-The loss was Hofstra's first of the season when holding an opponent under 50 points.
-Hofstra is 31-44 all-time versus Drexel and has lost six in a row against the Dragons.
-Hofstra's previous season-low in points was 38 against Stony Brook.
-Drexel's previous low in points was 49 against Bucknell and Pennsylvania.  
-The Pride held Greenberg, the nation's 29th best scorer, 10.9 points below her season average.
