CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore
Jaylen Hines poured in a career-high 30 points and Hofstra nearly overcame a 22-point second-half deficit but the Pride fell to the College of Charleston Cougars, 67-63 at TD Arena on Friday evening.
In addition to her point total, Hines pulled down 12 rebounds, good for her sixth double-double of the season. She was efficient all night long, shooting 11-of-14 effort from the floor while also making eight of her 11 free throw attempts while also tallying two blocks and one steal. Hines was on fire to start her night and was 7-of-7 from the field until the 6:16 mark in the third quarter.
In addition to Hines, freshman
Sorelle Ineza finished in double figures and notched 14 points (6-of-10 FG), and added three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
JaKayla Brown added eight points (4-of-5 FG), and seniors
Sandra Karsten and
Marianne Kalin both finished with five points and eight rebounds.
The Pride trailed, 41-24 at halftime, and Hines had 11 of Hofstra's 24 points at the midway point. Charleston scored the first five points of the second half to reach its largest lead of the contest at 22 points at with 8:59 to go in the third quarter. Hines scored six-straight points leading to a 9-2 Hofstra run to get within 15 with 5:39 in the third. The Pride capped off the third quarter with six-straight points including four by Hines and a jump shot by Ineza at the buzzer.
Charleston made four free throws to Hofstra's one field goal in the first 2:02 of the final frame, but the Pride stormed back with an 8-0 run, ignited by a three-pointer by Ineza. Brown scored the next six points for Hofstra and made it a four-point contest two times, first with a layup at 2:21 and again with a shot clock buzzer beater jump shot at 1:06. She added another two-point basket with 40 seconds on the clock, cutting the score to 65-63 in favor of Charleston.
Hofstra forced a key turnover with 10 seconds remaining before a pair of time outs were called. Following the breaks, a three-point attempt with four seconds on the clock fell just short and Charleston was able to corral the rebound, forcing Hofstra to foul. Charleston sunk both free throws and escaped with the victory.
The Pride limited Charleston to just 19 percent shooting (4-of-21) in the second half, although Charleston managed to shoot 16-of-21 from the free throw line during the final 20 minutes of action. Madison Taylor led four Cougars in double figures with 20 points.
The Pride fell to 3-24 overall and 0-16 while Charleston improved to 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Hofstra will look to rebound on Sunday against the UNCW Seahawks. Tip-off at the Trask Coliseum is set for 1 p.m.

-Hofstra is now 8-7 all-time against the Cougars
-Hines' 30 points was the most of any Pride player this season and it was the most points since
Boogie Brozoski set a program record of 42 points last season against Elon in the CAA Championship
-Hines led Hofstra in scoring for the 11th time this season, in rebounding for the 19th time, and both scoring and rebounding for the ninth time.
-It was Hines' 16th 10+ point game of the season and Ineza's 11th
-Ineza reached double figures for the third-straight game and fourth out of the last five. She is averaging 12.6 points per game over the last five games.
