Reno, NV -
Jimmy Joyce threw a complete game two-hitter as Hofstra defeated Nevada, 2-1, Friday night at Don Weir Field. The win salvaged a two-game split on the day for the Pride following a 19-10 loss earlier in the day to Wichita State.
Joyce (1-2) allowed singles in the third and sixth innings and worked around three errors to help the Pride snap a six-game losing streak. The junior righty walked one and struck out three.
Hofstra (2-7) opened the scoring in the third as
Tyler White led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Santino Rosso followed with a single to right center to plate White with the first run of the game. White started the Pride's run-scoring rally in the fifth as he once gain reached on a leadoff single and moved to third on
Austin Gauthier's single. Rosso grounded into a double play that allowed White to score what proved to be the winning run.
Nevada (0-7) cut the deficit in half in the sixth as Kiambu Fentress reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. Wyatt Tilley lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 2-1 game.
Joyce had to work around a baserunner in the ninth as Tilley reached on an error to start the frame. However, Joyce got a fly out on a nice play by
Anthony D'Onofrio in center and then struck out the final two batters.
White, Gauthier and Rosso each had two hits for the Pride.
Owen Sharts (0-2) took the loss for Nevada, allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings. He did strikeout 11 batters.
