WLAX: Hofstra Dominates Bucknell For First Win Of Season

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra received goals from eight different players, led by four each from Taylor Mennella and Grace Langella, as the Pride dominated Bucknell from the get-go in an 18-5 victory Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Pride raced out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back to earn their first win of the 2020 season.

Hofstra (1-1) scored eight times in the first 9:46 of the game as Alexa Mattera got things started with her fifth of the season at 3:18 mark of the first half. Katie Whelan followed with her first of the year 28 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. Langella netted her first two of the game at the 4:14 and 4:37 marks. Manella got in on the act with a free position goal at 5:49 before Whelan notched her second goal at 6:30 to make it a 6-0 Hofstra lead. Whelan would assist on the Pride's next goal as she fed Camryn Faith at the 8:51 mark to make it 7-0. Alyssa Parrella would make it an 8-0 game with her third goal of the season at 9:46. Mattera, Mennella (from Whelan), and Langella each added goals before Bucknell (2-1) broke through at 15:24 with a goal from Kali Peeples.

Mattera and Mennella would complete their hat tricks before the end of the first half as the Pride took a 13-2 lead into intermission. The Pride pulled back on the reins in the second half, outscoring Bucknell by a 5-3 margin in cruising to the easy win.

In addition to Mennella, Langella, and Mattera, the Pride got two goals and two assists from Whelan, two goals from Parrella, and one goal each from Sabrina Cristodero, Amanda Guerra, and Faith. Mattera also added an assist. Cristodero had a team-high seven draw controls as well as two caused turnovers in the game. Darcie Smith had six draw controls and two ground balls. Goalkeeper Jess Smith made six saves and allowed four goals in 52:07. Sara Guarascio played the finals 7:53 and had one save and one goal allowed.

Peeples had three goals to lead Bucknell while Eve Calabria notched a pair of assists. Starting goalkeeper Lauren Kinnee allowed 11 goals in 13:38 with four saves. Caitlin Tucker played the final 46:22 and made 11 saves and surrendered seven goals.

Hofstra is back in action Tuesday afternoon at Wagner. Game time on Staten Island is 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 11-5 all-time versus Bucknell.
-Parrella increased her program record goal total to 193 and her record point total to 265.
-Darcie Smith has 175 draw controls and is two behind April Iannetta (2012-15) for second place on Hofstra's all-time list.
-Mennella's goals were the first of her career while Langella's four were a career-high.
-Hofstra outshot Bucknell, 43-15.
