Hempstead, NY - Hofstra senior
Alyssa Parrella has had a career of spectacular performances and Tuesday was another example as she poured in a career-high eight goals, tied her career-high with nine points, and reached 200 career goals in the process, as she led the Hofstra women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 win over Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at Hameline Field. Parrella now has 201 career goals.
Parrella is the only player in program history with at least 200 career goals, the only active NCAA Division I women's lacrosse player with 200 career goals, and becomes the fifth player in Colonial Athletic Association history to reach the 200-goal plateau. She is the first in CAA history since Shannon Witzel (Towson) in 2007 and is now tied for fourth in CAA history with Gail Decker of James Madison. The eight goals tied the program's single game record.
The win was Hofstra's second straight as the Pride improved to 2-1 this season. Wagner falls to 1-2 with the loss. Pride sophomore
Jess Smith tied her career-high with 14 saves in the contest.
Senior
Alexa Mattera opened the scoring in the game with a free-position goal at the 26:43 mark before Wagner answered with three goals of their own to take an early lead. Wagner would still lead by two, 5-3, before Hofstra scored three straight goals, including tallies from sophomore
Amanda Guerra, Parrella, and sophomore
Alyssa DeAngelo, to lead 6-5 with 11:28 left before halftime. The goal was DeAngelo's first of her career. It was a defensive affair the final 10 minutes of the first half as only Wagner found the back of the net and the teams went into the break tied at six.
It was all Hofstra in the second half, though, as the Pride scored the first eight goals of the second stanza to take complete control of the game and would never look back. Parrella opened up the second half scoring with an unassisted tally at the 28:24 mark and she would score three of the first four goals in the half with the other goal coming off the stick of sophomore
Erin Demek. After Guerra added another goal at the 12:53 mark, Parrella added two more and Mattera picked up another goal to push the lead to 14-6. The Seahawks got a pair of goals in the final seven minutes, while Parrella scored her eighth of the game with 2:34 left on a free-position shot. The 200th career goal came with 11:45 on the clock.
Guerra finished with three points (2G, 1A) and Demek also had three points (1G, 2A). Senior
Darcie Smith posted a season-high tying eight draw controls and had a career-best four caused turnovers for the Pride. Mattera finished with five draw controls, four ground balls, two goals, and caused turnovers.
Hofstra had a 16-9 advantage in draw controls and also posted nine caused turnovers in the game.
Stephanie Falcone led Wagner with three goals, while Stefani Peluso had four points on one goal and three assists. Lauren DiStefano had 16 saves in net for the Seahawks.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Fairfield at 11 a.m. The game is part of a Pride lacrosse doubleheader as the men's lacrosse team will host Villanova at 2 p.m. For ticket information visit HofstraTickets.com, call (516) HOF-TIXX or stop by the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office in the lobby of the David S.
