BB: Hofstra Splits Doubleheader With Purdue

Sanford, FL - Anthony D'Onofrio went 4-5 with three RBIs to lead a 16-hit onslaught as Hofstra won the first game of a doubleheader, 13-6, over Purdue Saturday afternoon at Sanford Memorial Stadium. Purdue took game two, 10-4.

Hofstra (1-2) took control of the game with a seven-run sixth inning to turn a 5-4 deficit into an 11-5 lead. Hofstra loaded the bases in the inning with one out and D'Onofrio delivered a two-run single that gave Hofstra the lead for good at 6-5. Following another run coming in on an error, Vinnie Cosetllo drove in the eighth Pride run with a double to left that put runners on second and third. After a walk and a fielder's choice produced a run, Ryan Morash capped the frame with a two-run double to right field.

Hofstra would add two more runs in the ninth as Austin Gauthier had a RBI double and D'Onofrio delivered an RBI single.

Steven Boscia started for the Pride and allowed four hits and four runs (one earned) with five strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. Lucas Hall (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief and was the pitcher of record, picking up his first win in a Hofstra uniform after spending his undergraduate career at Columbia.

Gauthier finished 2-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Santino Rosso had his first career hits, going 2-5 with an RBI and run scored. Costello had two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Will Kennedy had his first two career hits and scored twice, while Morash added a pair of hits as well with two RBIs.

Conner Tomasic (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs over 1 2/3 innings. Bryce Bonner went 2-2 with three RBIs for the Boilermakers.

In game two, Purdue scored nine runs over the seventh and eighth innings to erase a 4-1 deficit and salvage the split. Hofstra gave up a run in the first but tied the game on a solo home run from Tyler White in the third and then went ahead later in the inning on an RBI single from D'Onofrio. Costello made it a 3-1 game with a solo home run in the fourth and then hit a second blast in the sixth to make it 4-1.

Purdue would score three runs in the seventh to tie the score. A bases loaded sacrifice fly followed by a two-run double from Evan Albrecht knotted things up at four before the Boilermakers erupted for six in the eighth. Zac Fascia put Purdue ahead, 5-4, with a sacrifice fly and Miles Simington added a grand slam to make it 9-4. Albrecht capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Ryan Rue started for the Pride and took a no decision after allowing two runs on three hits over 6-plus innings. Andrew Mundy (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Cory Brooks (1-0) earned the win in relief for Purdue (2-1).
