Pittsburgh, PA - Despite cutting the deficit to just six points midway through the fourth quarter, the Hofstra University women's basketball team could not upend the University of Pittsburgh inside the Petersen Events Center on Sunday, Nov. 29, falling by a 71-58 final.
Sunday's matchup with the Panthers had a lot of familiarity for several Hofstra team members, as Head Coach
Danielle Santos Atkinson served as Pittsburgh's associate head coach during the 2018-19 season, and juniors
Jaala Henry and
Jahsyni Knight transferred to Hofstra from the Steel City.
The Pride finished the game shooting 30-percent from the field and 21-percent from beyond the arc. Junior
Rosi Nicholson posted her first double-figure game and led Hofstra with 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting, while redshirt-junior
Jaylen Hines and Knight reached double-figures for the second-consecutive game with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Nicholson led Hofstra's perimeter offense with three made three-pointers, while also leading the team with nine rebounds and four steals. Henry also posted four steals on the day to help Hofstra to 12 swipes. Knight rounded out the top-three scorers with 11 points while also hauling down a team-high nine rebounds and four steals.
Pittsburgh got out to a strong start early, taking a 23-10 lead into the second quarter and stretched the margin to as many as 21 points during the first half. The Pride started to chip away late in the third period, however, using an 8-2 run to make it 58-45.
Hofstra did not stop at the final quarter break, using an eight-point burst to open the fourth quarter, capping off the 16-3 run to make the score 59-53. Despite the momentum, Pittsburgh scored eight of the final 11 points to keep the Pride out of reach and earn its second win of the season.
Following a week off, the Pride will host Fairfield University for their first home contest of the season on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2:00 p.m. The event will be closed to the public and tickets will not be sold.
