Jaala Henry notched her first career double-double and led Hofstra with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but a late rally fell short as Fairfield defeated the Pride, 75-55 inside the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Sunday, Dec 6.
Hofstra falls to 1-2 on the season with today's loss, while the Stags moved to 1-1 on the year.
The Pride finished the contest 32.8-percent shooting and 25-percent from three-point territory. Henry's 15 points tied a career-high in scoring as she went 6-of-10 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line, while her 10 rebounds set a new personal-best. Junior
JaKayla Brown finished with 13 points on 4-of-16 shooting and 5-of-6 from the line and junior Jashyni Knight scored 10 points as she shot 2-of-4 behind the three-point line and 3-of-10 overall. Knight's two three-point baskets led all Hofstra players in that category, and she tied with junior
Rosi Nicholson for the team-lead in three assists. Brown and Nicholson topped all Hofstra players with three steals each.
Fairfield started the game with an 11-0 run before the Pride battled back to within seven at the end of the first quarter thanks to seven points from Henry. The Pride chipped away at the lead with sharp second-quarter shooting from Knight to pull to within five before Fairfield extended their lead to 16 points with a 15-4 run, including the last nine points of the period, before halftime.
Brown scored the first four points of the second half, but Fairfield scored eight consecutive points to rebuild their lead. The teams traded baskets through the period before a Fairfield three-pointer put the visitors ahead, 63-40.Hofstra went on a 13-1 run to start the fourth quarter to pull to within 16, with Brown scoring six and Henry scoring four, but the Stags finished the period with six of the final eight points to keep Hofstra out of reach.
The Pride will return to action on Friday, Dec. 11, when they host the University of Albany at 3:00 p.m. The event will be closed to the public and tickets will not be sold.
NOTES:
-This was the 12th all-time meeting between the two teams. Hofstra is now 8-3 against Fairfield.
-Three players for Hofstra finished with double figures, making it three consecutive games in 2020-21 with multiple players scoring 10 or more points. Knight also recorded double-digit points for the third-straight game.
-The Hofstra defense forced Fairfield into committing 20 turnovers for the third straight contest, and it was the third consecutive game where the opponent turned the ball over more than Hofstra
-The Pride shot 73.7-percent (14-19) from the free throw line, achieving a season-best mark for free throw percentage
-Fairfield knocked down 17 three-pointers compared to Hofstra's three.
