WBB: Hofstra Falls in CAA Opener at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – The Hofstra University women's basketball team opened up Colonial Athletic Association action with a 74-51 setback to the Northeastern Huskies at Matthews Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Redshirt sophomore Jaylen Hines finished as Hofstra's top scorer and rebounder, as she shot 6-of-9 (67 percent) from the floor for 12 points with eight boards in just 15 minutes on the floor. Behind Hines was senior Marianne Kalin who added eight points, and three Pride players concluded with six points including redshirt junior Ana Hernandez Gil, sophomore Caria Reynolds and senior Sandra Karsten. Hernandez Gil dished out four assists, and redshirt senior Mikiyah Croskey tallied five points and five rebounds.

Hines scored the first four points of the game to give the Pride a 4-0 lead in the first 1:08 of action, but Northeastern scored 11-straight points to jump out to an early advantage. Kalin and Karsten scored five-straight tallies for the Pride to get Hofstra back within two with 1:56 to go in the first frame, however Northeastern scored the final five points of the first quarter for a 20-13 edge after one.

Reynolds opened up the second quarter scoring after a Northeastern turnover, but the Huskies used three separate runs to pull away to a 44-24 lead over the Pride at halftime.

Hernandez Gil opened second half scoring with a three-pointer and Hines followed with a layup right out of the locker room, but Northeastern responded with five points by the five-minute mark in the third. Hofstra put together a strong defensive effort after that Northeastern run as the Pride held the Huskies to just two points over the next four and a half minutes.

The Pride had its best offensive performance in the final quarter, shooting 7-of-10 from the field while out-scoring Northeastern, 15-14 during the final 10 minutes of action. During the quarter, Hines shot 3-of-3 from the floor while Reynolds was 2-of-3 on her shot attempts. Northeastern finished the quarter shooting 5-of-11 from the floor, but the lead was too much for Hofstra to catch up to as the Huskies clinched the CAA opening victory.

Hofstra will return to the floor for its fourth and fifth-straight road games next Friday and Sunday. The Pride will take on the Delaware Blue Hens at the Bob Carpenter Center on Friday, January 10 at 7 p.m. before heading to Drexel on Sunday, January 12 at 2 p.m.
