WBB: Delaware Tops Hofstra in CAA Road Test

NEWARK, Del. – Redshirt sophomore forward Jaylen Hines scored a team-high 15 points to go along with nine rebounds, but the Hofstra women's basketball team suffered an 80-59 decision to the Delaware Blue Hens at the Bob Carpenter Center on Friday night.

Hofstra dropped to 3-10 on the year and 0-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association while Delaware improved to 5-9 and 1-2 in league play.

Hines, who posted her second-straight game in double figures and fifth in the last seven games, finished her night shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. In addition, Hines matched her career-high with three steals and added a pair of assists. Joining Hines in double figures was senior forward Marianne Kalin who shot 5-of-7 from the floor for 10 points, while adding four rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.

Freshman Sorelle Ineza rounded out the top-three scorers with nine points and five assists, and redshirt sophomore guard Ana Hernandez Gil added seven points, three rebounds and two blocks for the Pride. Sophomore Shawn Mills dished out a career-high five assists, shattering her previous career-high of two.

Delaware jumped out to a 7-2 lead over Hofstra, but the Pride quickly tied things up as senior guard Sandra Karsten knocked down a three-pointer and Ineza transitioned from defense to offense with a steal and layup at the 6:49 mark. Delaware re-gained a five-point lead shortly after to make it 12-7, but another bucket by Ineza and a Hofstra free throw brought things back within one point. The Blue Hens scored eight of the quarter's final 10 points to lead by six after one.

Hofstra got off to a good start in the second quarter with baskets by Kalin, sophomore Caria Reynolds and a three-pointer by Hernandez Gil, but an 8-0 spurt that included four free throws allowed the Blue Hens to reach a lead by 11 at the 3:33 mark and again at 1:38 which carried into halftime. Despite the run, Hofstra was strong defensively and held the Blue Hens to only 25 percent (4-of-16) shooting from the field.

Hofstra shot a game-best 44 percent in the third quarter, but Delaware also posted its best offensive effort of the night during that 10-minute span and shot at a 55 percent clip from the field in the third quarter. Hines opened up the fourth quarter with four points including a steal and layup at the 9:05 mark in the final period, but Delaware kept Hofstra at bay and clinched their first CAA win of the season. Hines had an excellent fourth quarter, shooting 4-of-7 from the floor to net 10 of her 15 points in the final 10 minutes.

The Pride will enjoy a day of rest before battling the Drexel Dragons on Sunday, January 12 in another CAA matchup. Tip-off at the Daskalaskis Athletic Center in Philadelphia is set for 2 p.m.
