WBB: Hines Nets Career-High, Hofstra Falls at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Four players tallied double figures in scoring including redshirt sophomore forward Jaylen Hines who net a career-high 20 points and a double double, but the Hofstra women's basketball team fell to the Towson Tigers in a Colonial Athletic Association contest n Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.
 
Hines finished her day shooting 53 percent from the field (9-of-17) while hauling down 14 rebounds, half on the offensive end and half defensive. Hines also recorded a career-best four assists. Joining Hines Hofstra's leading scorer was junior guard Ana Hernandez Gil who tallied 20 points on 54 percent shooting (7-of-13) while sinking four three-pointers.
 
Senior forward Marianne Kalin had another solid game on the floor as she posted a 78 percent shooting mark (7-of-9) for 17 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Sorelle Ineza was the final Pride player in double figures as she packed the stat sheet with 10 points, eight boards and five assists.
 
Hofstra stormed out of the gates with its best effort in a single quarter all season long, as the Pride opened up the contest hitting 11 of 16 shots from the field (69 percent) to pick up early momentum. After each team hit an opening field goal, Hofstra sparked a 7-2 run that brought the Pride to an 11-4 lead with 6:25 on the clock, forcing an early Towson time out. The Pride got ahead of the Tigers by as many as nine points on two occasions, first with a Kalin layup at 4:05 to make the score, 18-9 and later at 1:52 with a Hernandez Gil jump shot to increase the lead to 20-11. Hofstra extended the advantage to 24-17 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The second quarter saw an even performance for both teams. Towson got within one point with 4:05 left in the frame, but Hofstra never gave up the lead and used a 9-3 spurt to get ahead by seven again with 33 seconds to go in the half. Towson added one more basket to close the quarter, but the Pride entered the locker room with a 41-36 advantage.
 
Kalin and Hines scored the first two buckets of the second half to get ahead by nine for the third time, however Towson responded with a 14-2 run to gain its first lead of the game with 6:14 to go in the third. After another Tiger bucket, the Pride tied the game at 50 with a Hernandez Gil three-pointer at 5:13 and at 52 with a Hines layup at 3:33, but Towson closed the quarter out strong and found themselves ahead by six with 10 minutes to play.
 
Towson's best offensive quarter of the day was the last, as the Tigers shot 59 percent (10-of-17) to Hofstra's 43 percent to pull away late. The Tigers also finished with four double figure scorers, including Q. Murray (22), Nukiya Mayo (21), Kionna Jeter (21) and Ryan Holder (12).
 
Hofstra drops to 3-15 on the season and 0-7 in the CAA while Towson improves to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
 
The Pride will kick off a four-game home stretch next weekend with meetings against UNCW and Charleston. The Pride will first host UNCW on Friday, January 31 at 7 p.m. and will follow that up with a game against Charleston on February 2 at 1 p.m.
 
NOTES:
-Towson now has the advantage on the all-time series, leading the Pride, 36-35
-Hines recorded her fourth double double of the season
-Hofstra concluded with four players in double figures in scoring for the fourth time this season
-Towson had 21 fast break points
