WBB: Hofstra Rally Falls Short Against UNCW

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra rallied from a nine-point deficit with under two minutes to play in the game to pull within one, but UNCW was able to outlast the Pride, 62-59, Friday night in a Colonial Athletic Association game at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra fell to 3-16 overall and 0-8 in the CAA with the loss. UNCW moved to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in the CAA with the win and snapped a four-game losing streak.

Jaylen Hines led the Pride with 16 points and nine rebounds. JaKayla Brown came off the bench to score 12 points while Sorelle Ineza had 11 points. Ana Hernandez Gil had nine points on 3-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Seahawks led throughout the first quarter, going up by as many as six (14-8) with 2:33 to play on Chinyere Bell's jumper. The Pride would cut the deficit to two, 14-12, with 1:38 to go following back-to-back baskets from Hines and Vanerlie Valcourt. However, UNCW would get a bucket with three second left to take a 16-12 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.

Hofstra would take its first lead of the game with 4:15 to play in the second quarter on a Hines layup that made the score 21-20. Hines would strike again on Hofstra's next possession as the Pride took a 23-20 lead. UNCW responded with seven unanswered points, including a three-pointer from Bell, to retake the lead at 27-23 with 1:45 to play. The Pride cut the lead to one on a three-point play from Ineza, but UNCW closed out the half with five unanswered points to lead 32-26.

UNCW scored the first seven points of the third quarter to go up by 13, 39-26, with 7:15 to play following a steal and layup by Lacey Suggs. Brown got Hofstra on the board with a layup of her own six seconds later. Brown would add a pair of free throws with 6:27 to play as the Pride cut the Seahawks' lead to nine, 39-30. Hofstra got as close as seven, 41-34, with 5:12 to go after a steal and layup from Hines. Suggs would score five straight points for the Seahawks as UNCW went back up by 12, 46-34, and would lead at the end of the quarter, 48-38.    

The Pride opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to pull within five, 48-43, with 8:28 to play. Brown had four of the Pride's points in the run. UNCW went back up by nine, 54-45, with 5:35 to go before the Pride cut the lead back down to five once again on Sandra Karsten's jumper with 4:21 remaining. UNCW would go back up by nine (58-49) with two minutes to play but Hofstra rallied once again and made it a one-point game, 58-57, with 47 seconds to go on a Hernandez Gil three-pointer. Following a UNCW timeout, the Seahawks Moriah Crisp hit a short jumper as the shot clock wound down to put the visitors up 60-57 with 17.2 seconds to go. Hofstra would turn the ball over on its ensuing possession and UNCW hit two free throws with under 10 second to play. Hines had a basket for Hofstra as time expired to account for the final score.

Suggs had 17 points for UNCW and added seven rebounds. Carole-Anne Obusek chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, and five blocks. Ahyiona Vason had 10 points and five assists.

Notes:
-Hofstra leads the all-time series with UNCW, 19-18, but the Seahawks have won four consecutive games.
-Both teams shot 50-percent from the field with Hofstra (23-46, 50%) and UNCW (25-46, 54%).
-Hofstra out-rebounded the Seahawks, 27-22.
