WBB: Hofstra Suffers CAA Decision to James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Hofstra University women's basketball team dropped a tough Colonial Athletic Association matchup to the first place James Madison Dukes at the Convocation Center on Friday evening by a score of 92-50.

Redshirt sophomore forward Jaylen Hines finished as Hofstra's leading scorer with 12 points while also adding five rebounds. Sophomore Vanerlie Valcourt chipped in a season-high eight points while also tallying four rebounds, three assists and two steals. In addition to Hines, three other Hofstra players tallied five rebounds including senior Marianne Kalin, freshman Sorelle Ineza and redshirt junior guard, Ana Hernandez Gil.

Kalin added seven points wihle Ineza and sophomore Caria Reynolds added six points each for Hofstra, while Reynolds' point total came from a 3-of-4 effort from the field. Hernandez Gil scored five points for the Pride as well. James Madison got double-digit performances from three players, including Jackie Benitez (26), Kamiah Smalls (19) and Kiki Jefferson (19).

Senior Sandra Karsten got Hofstra on the scoreboard first with a pull-up jumper, but James Madison used a 13-2 run to gain early control. The Dukes extended that lead to 28-8 at the end of the first quarter. Hofstra opened up the second quarter on a 7-2 spurt by Hernandez Gil, Ineza and Hines, but the Dukes maintained momentum throughout the remainder of the first half.

Hofstra net a game-high 15 points in the third quarter including four from Hines and four from Ineza. Hines went on to add six points in the fourth quarter while shooting 3-of-4 during the last 10 minutes to reach double figures in the second half alone. Hofstra also shot a game-best 53 percent from the field (7-of-13) in the final frame as well but the deficit was too much to overcome for the Pride.
