MSOC: Late Goal Lifts No. 10 Virginia Tech Past Hofstra

Harrisonburg, VA - Marc Hoppler scored in the 84th minute to snap a 3-3 tie as 10th ranked Virginia Tech edged Hofstra, 4-3, at Sentara Park, Sunday evening on the final day of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. The Pride scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to tie the game.

The Pride moved to 2-2 on the season with the loss. The Hokies improved to 4-0 on the season.

Kristo Strickler (9th minute) and Storm Strongin (36th minute) exchanged goals in the first half as the teams entered halftime in a 1-1 tie. But the Hokies would take the lead in the 51st minute following a handball in the box that resulted in a penalty kick. Jon Ingason would convert for a 2-1 lead. Strickler would net his second of the game in the 58th minute to put the Hokies up by two, 3-1.

But Hofstra would storm back with goals in the 73rd and 74th minutes. Petter Soelberg notched his first Hofstra goal as he sent in a cross from Jesse Schleeper to make it 3-2. 52 seconds later, Frederik Rieper took a pass from Jason Ramirez and scored his second of the season to tie the game.

However, Hoppler headed a cross from Nick Blalock past Hofstra keeper Alex Ashton for the game-winner at the 83:08 mark. Ashton would finish with four saves on the night. Virginia Tech keeper Mathijs Swaneveld had one save for the Hokies.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday when it travels to College of Charleston for a Colonial Athletic Association game at 1 p.m.

-Virginia Tech outshot the Pride, 22-13.
-Hofstra is now 1-1 all-time versus the Hokies.
-Ramirez and Schleeper's assists were their first career points.
