Hempstead, NY – Hofstra freshman
Merlijn van der Vegt made seven saves, including one on a penalty stroke attempt, but Bailey Matthews second quarter goal stood up for the Catamounts as Vermont (1-2) edged the Pride, 1-0 at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Van der Vegt, making her second start for the Pride, tallied six of her seven saves in the second half including the penalty stroke stop on Vermont's Sydney Melfi in the third quarter. Hofstra's Dutch goalie launched herself to her right to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Vermont's goal came just 4:46 into the second quarter when Bailey Matthews sent a pass/shot across the Hofstra goal to van der Vegt's right side.
The Pride had several good scoring opportunities in the contest including a shot by sophomore
Djuna Slort, who was stopped on her first shot by Sierra Espeland (two saves) in the middle of the circle, and then sent a shot past the Catamounts' goalie only to have midfielder Haley Buffenbarger sweep the ball away for a defensive save.
