FH: Hofstra Tops Sacred Heart For First Win For New Coach Veinotte

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Mercedes Currie, junior Jordan Thompson and sophomore Ming Doherty each scored Pride goals and freshman goalie Merlijn van der Vegt recorded five saves to lead Hofstra to a 3-1 victory over the Pioneers of Sacred Heart at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The victory was the first for the Pride's new head field hockey coach Courtney Veinotte.

Hofstra (1-4) got on the board just 6:26 into the contest when Currie took a long pass from sophomore Djuna Slort and buried a shot into the far corner for a 1-0 lead. It was Currie's first collegiate goal. The Pride boosted the lead to 2-0 9:24 into the third quarter when Thompson picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and flicked a shot into the top left corner for her first goal of the season.

Sacred Heart (1-4) closed the gap to 2-1 just 23 seconds later when Kayla Kruk beat van der Vegt over her head and under the crossbar for her first goal of the year.

Hofstra sophomore Ming Doherty notched her first career goal with 5:42 to play in the fourth quarter off a perfect goal mouth pass from classmate Cami Larsson to give the Pride a 3-1 advantage. Hofstra outshot the Pioneers, 22-17 while Sacred Heart recorded 14 penalty corners to the Pride's 10. Sacred Heart recorded 10 saves including five in the first half by Hailey Power, four in the second half by Alyssa Stevens and one defensive save by Bridget Kelly.
