Harrisonburg, VA - James Madison scored two late second half goals as the Dukes defeated Hofstra, 2-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams Friday night at Sentara Park. The game was part of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational. It was also a rematch of the 2018 CAA Championship game, which ended in a 1-1 tie before the Dukes advanced on penalty kicks.
The Pride fell to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in CAA play. James Madison, which is the defending CAA champion and the preseason favorite to win the title again this year, won for the first time in 2019 to move to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The teams played a scoreless first half. Both teams had five shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the Dukes put three of their shots on goal. Hofstra keeper
Alex Ashton was up to the task as he had three saves in the half. The score remained 0-0 until Clay Obara picked up the ball in the Duke's attacking end and dribbled the ball into the box before putting a shot into the lower right corner in the 75th minute. Brennen Burton extended the lead in the 87th minute as he took a pass from Brandon Clegg and put a shot from about 17 yards out past Ashton.
Hofstra had several good scoring opportunities but was not able to put one of its seven shots on goal. The Pride also had eight corner kicks in the game. Ashton made five saves for the Pride, while his JMU counterpart, T.J. Bush, did not record a save in the shutout victory.
Hofstra will return to action Sunday when it plays No. 10 Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. in Harrisonburg.

-Hofstra is 12-10-3 all-time versus James Madison.
-James Madison outshot the Pride, 9-7.
-The two goals were the first allowed by the Pride this season.
