FH: Van Der Vegt Makes 12 Saves But Hofstra Falls To Monmouth

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra freshman goalie Merlijn van der Vegt made 12 saves in her collegiate debut but Monmouth's Annick van Lange and Yasmin Pratt each scored twice to lead the visiting Hawks (2-1) to a 6-0 victory over the Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

Van der Vegt, a native of Utrecht, The Netherlands, made nine of her 12 saves in the first half to hold Monmouth to just two goals in the first 30 minutes while facing 19 shots.

After a scoreless first quarter, it was Pratt's first goal, off a deflection in front with 6:06 to play in the second quarter, which turned out to be the game-winner. Van Lange added consecutive goals late in the second and 8:40 into the third quarter to boost the lead to 3-0. Josephine van der Hoop and Stefanie Bigler scored 47 seconds apart in the final minutes of the third.

After a lightning delay of 30 minutes at the 11:33 mark of the fourth quarter, the teams returned and Pratt closed out the scoring with 2:51 to play in the contest. Ireen Frenken tallied three assists for the Hawks.

Hofstra had a great opportunity to get on the board late in the contest when Jordan Thompson fed Madison Warfel alone in the center of the circle. Warfel's blast was stopped by substitute goalie Ally Tarentino, who entered the contest at the start of the fourth quarter and recorded the Hawks lone save.

Hofstra (0-3) returns to action this Sunday, September 8 when the Pride entertain Vermont at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is noon.
