Providence, RI – The Hofstra Field Hockey team saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bears of Brown defeated the Pride, 3-0 at the Goldberger Family Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Brown (2-5) jumped on the board with 6:52 to play in the second quarter as senior Corinne Condie got by a Hofstra defender and beat Pride freshman goalie
Merlijn van der Vegt from up close for a 1-0 lead. It was her first goal of the season.
While the Pride recorded only three shots in the first half, the score remained at 1-0 until the fourth quarter when the Bears added two more tallies. Just 3:13 into the period, senior Hannah Leckey scored off a rebound for a 2-0 advantage. Almost three minutes later, junior Anya Nayak fed her twin sister Anagha Mayak on a breakaway for the Bears final goal with 8:46 to play in the contest.
Hofstra's Merlijn Van der Vegt made five saves while Brown utilized two freshmen goalies, Jodie Brine (3 saves) and Calista Manuzza (2 saves) who combined for the shutout.
The Pride (3-5) will be back in action next Sunday, September 29 when Hofstra hosts the Bulldogs of Yale at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is noon.
